“My son left the village to become an officer. He was supposed to return in a red-beacon car, but he returned in an ambulance.” These words from Prathamesh’s mother should haunt all of us. Across rural India, young people leave their villages and move to cities with one dream: to clear competitive exams, become officers and lift their families out of poverty. But that dream comes at a huge cost. Rent, food, coaching and years of preparation already put enormous financial pressure on families with limited means. Add paper leaks, repeated delays and exam irregularities, and the system makes an already difficult journey unbearable. For a rural student, every cancelled or compromised exam is not just another inconvenience. It means more months away from home, more money their family may not have, and another blow to a dream they have sacrificed so much for. Prathamesh’s death is a failure of a government that could not give its youth even the hope to live.
